As
many predicted, 11-year-old Kayden Troff from West Jordan won gold
medals in all three chess events at the Utah Summer Games in Cedar
City, but not without a valiant struggle and a couple of speed
bumps. He went 4-0 in Chess960 (Fischer Random
Chess). Damian Nash earned the Silver at 3-1 and Enoch Israel
took the Bronze with 2.5 ponts. Tomy Jones and River Guinan took
the prizes in the youth category. Shortly afterwards, Kayden and
Damian Nash swept the Bughouse tournament 8-0, followed by Jeremy Troff
and Scott Treiman who took silver at 6-2, and two teams who tied for
the Bronze: Dan and Zachary Troff, and Bryon Doyle with Enoch
Israel. In the Utah Quick Championship tournament Kayden
tied at 10 out of twelve with Bryon Doyle of St. George, who had a
spectacular tournament. He handed Kayden his only loss of the
weekend in a split match and picked up over 100 rating points along the
way. Scott Treiman won the gold medal for under age 20 with 8
points out of 12, going up nearly 70 points and very nearly handing his
friend Kayden another loss in the final round. The silver and
bronze medals for adults went to Tom Hutchins and Damian Nash, and for
the under-20 category went to Antonio Padron and James Olmstead.
UCA President Grant Hodson had a good tournament and won the gold medal
in the senior division. The tournament results are online

dozen newcomers of all ages played in the Amateur event and enjoyed the
venue of the SUU ballroom, located in the heart of the beautiful
campus. Clear first place went to 9-year-old Royce Pereira
of Las Vegas who had eleven wins and a draw. Two adults
tied for second place with 9 points: Kelly Jones of Salt Lake and
Doug Griffin of Cedar City. In the under-15 division Tomy Jones
took home the gold with 9.5 points, River Guinan was second at 6
points, and Liceu Pereira took the bronze. In the under-10
category Ethan Bates of Cedar City took first place with 6.5 points and
Eliza Allen took silver. In the girls category Isabelle
Bowers claimed the gold with 3 points and Lauren Allen took
silver. The Utah Summer Games website lists the winners on their
website: https://secure.utahsummergames.org/results/results.aspx?sport=CHESS&year=2009 Although
the competition was intense, the spirit of fun characterized the
weekend tournament, most especially during bughouse where audience and
participants alike were frequently seen laughing, amidst looks of
bewilderment and astonishment. With these three tournament
victories Kayden Troff has become the reigning Utah State Champion in
five of the six chess events that have been contested so far this
year: G/60, G/15, G/5, Chess960 and Bughouse. http://www.utahchess.com/champs.html Damian
