2012 Utah Chess Grand Prix

Summary of Rules

The Utah Chess Association (the “UCA” or the “Association”) shall sponsor a Grand Prix competition during 2012, open to all members of the U. S. Chess Federation (the “USCF”) who are residents of the State of Utah (as reflected in USCF records).  The principal rules for the Grand Prix competition are summarized as follows:

  1. The Grand Prix competition shall involve the awarding of “Grand Prix” points (“GP Points”) based on placements of players in quick-rated, regular-rated and dual-rated tournaments (“GP Events”) sponsored or sanctioned by the UCA during 2011.  For each GP Event, the normal rate for awarding GP Points shall be in accordance with the following scale: First place – 21 points; second place – 15 points; third place – 12 points; fourth place – 10 points; fifth place – 8 points; sixth place – 6 points.
  2. Players with equal total scores for any GP Event shall receive equal GP Points for that event in an amount equal to the average (arithmetic mean) of points awarded for the several placements for which they tied. (See Note 1, below.)
  3. The value of GP Points to be awarded for particular tournaments may be proportionally adjusted in some cases, for example, to reflect the relative significance of the event.  (See Note 2, below.)
  4. GP Points shall generally be awarded only for the top section of each GP Event.  For the Class Championships tournament, however, GP Points shall be awarded for all sections, but at lower rates for the lower-rated sections, as specified in more detail in the complete Regulations for 2012 Utah Chess Grand Prix, which are available through the link provided at www.utahchess.com.
  5. The prize structure for the Grand Prix competition and current Grand Prix standings will be posted on the UCA website (www.utahchess.com).

Notes

Note 1:

If, but only if, the final placements in a GP Event involve a tie among several players including sixth place and also one or more places lower than sixth, each place below sixth for which a player has a score tied for sixth place shall be awarded 4 GP Points.  For example, if two players tie for sixth and seventh places, they shall each receive 5 GP Points [calculated as follows: (6 + 4) / 2 = 10 / 2 = 5]; if three players tie for sixth, seventh and eighth places, they shall each receive 4.67 GP Points [calculated as follows: (6 + 4 + 4) / 3 = 14 / 3 = 4.67 (rounded to two decimal places)]; and, as a final example, if three players tie for fifth, sixth and seventh places, they shall each receive 6 GP Points [calculated as follows: (8 + 6 + 4) / 3 = 18 / 3 = 6].

Note 2:

For the Utah Open and the Utah Chess State Championship, GP Points shall be awarded at one and one-half (1.5) times the normal value.  The Board of Directors of the UCA shall have final authority to determine the rate at which GP Points shall be awarded for any particular GP Event by vote taken prior to the start of the tournament.
